A Luxury That We Call 'Freedom'!

What is Freedom to you?

Is it stepping out of your home for a night out with your friends?
Or is it as little as getting to buy whatever you want from the money you got from your relatives?

The word 'FREEDOM' has different meanings and different stages depending upon a person's environment. It can be as small as a decision to choose between your favorite sweets or as big as choosing your life partner.

Most countries tag themselves as a free country but, are they really what they show?
Taking the example of my country- INDIA.
We have the most variant culture, language and traditions as there are fishes in the ocean, each having their unique characteristics. And still people believe in superstitions to the roots of their daily life such as the Taboo of a menstruating woman, a woman on top, a molestation victim can only be a woman not a man, and so on.

Scene I:

In the remote areas of Rajasthan, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh- the girls are not permitted to choose their life goals, even the option of schooling is not into their hands. Baalika Vadhu is still prevalent in those states under the supervision of wise people. The young girls are married to older men at a mere age of 12 (or when they first receive their menstruation cycle) and have to worship them as their only God. She is then not allowed to have any connections with her parents until the husband says so. She becomes a slave to her husband and in-laws, only to be used as per their discern.

What do you think Freedom means to the young girl?

Scene II:

In a 10*10 room, a dalit family of six resides- a mother, a father, 3 daughters and a son. The gram panchayat doesn't allow anyone from their creed for education or worshiping. Being a construction labor and the sole earner of a family of six, the father has never made his family short on any luxury they have asked for. On one ominous day, the youngest son started coughing blood with no end to his sufferings, the father pleaded the Head Panchayat for help to which a strange condition was placed. He asked for his youngest daughter to become his bride. The girl has just turned 16 and the Head Panchayat was married with a son of the same age. The father was in dilemma whether to choose his dying son or his precious little daughter. He was cursing himself, only if he had more money or if he hadn't been born a dalit.

All kinds of sultry music is playing from various houses, women in sarees, young girls in those tight skirts could be seen waving hands to call the men passing by. With a raced heart beat and a hope to be not betrayed, the girl enters a building covered with all sort of women and men. A nightmare strikes her when she hears about her being sold in the red light area. She would be earning highly, can give luxurious life to her parents back in the village but, at a cost.
